9th DR Evening Talk Series 2026
Shearn Delamore & Co. recently hosted its 9th DR Evening Talk Series of 2026 on 11 September 2026, featuring an engaging and interactive session titled “Subsea Cables, Pipeline Projects and the Law of the Sea: UNCLOS and the Malaysian Experience.”
The session was delivered by our distinguished guest speaker, Redza Zakaria, Head of Maritime Law, Policy and Governance at the Institute of Ocean and Earth Sciences (IOES), Universiti Malaya, and Senior Lecturer at the Faculty of Law, Universiti Malaya. The session was moderated by our Dispute Resolution Partner, Hee Hui Ting.
Redza provided valuable insights into the legal framework governing subsea cables and pipelines under UNCLOS, as well as Malaysia's legislative and practical experience in this area. He also discussed the legal recourse available to various parties in the event of damage to subsea cables. Highlighting Malaysia's strategic geographical position, Redza noted Malaysia's significant potential to develop into a global data hub. He further emphasised the importance of greater adherence by nations to the principles and best practices embodied in UNCLOS.
The session concluded with closing remarks by our Shipping & Maritime Partner, Nik Azila Shuhada, who provided an overview of the firm’s Shipping & Maritime practice for the benefit of our lawyers.
At Shearn Delamore & Co., we remain committed to fostering continuous learning and professional development through regular training and knowledge-sharing initiatives.
