Our Partner, Nik Azila Shuhada Nik Abdullah, recently spoke at the 6th Annual Special Economic Zones Conference, held in Johor Bahru, Malaysia.

Speaking on “Legal Readiness for Digital Special Economic Zones: From Digital Trade to Cross-Border Risk Management,” Nik shared a practitioner’s perspective on strengthening investor confidence through robust legal and regulatory frameworks, effective governance and dispute prevention.

Her session also considered emerging legal risks affecting Special Economic Zones, including ESG compliance, sanctions and supply-chain disruptions, as well as practical legal considerations for developing resilient and investment-ready economic zones in an increasingly complex operating environment.

The two-day conference brought together policymakers, regulators and industry leaders from Malaysia and across the region, with discussions spanning the Johor-Singapore Special Economic Zone (JS-SEZ), infrastructure and PPPs, ESG, investment incentives, logistics, digitalisation, AI, governance and regulatory innovation.
